Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Displacement Confirmed

The Philippines has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Officials stated that the powerful weather system triggered extensive sudden floods, coastal inundation, mudslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, leading to the relocation of 1.4 million residents nationwide.

Extensive Destruction and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams recorded floodwaters reaching the tops of houses and residences being swept away by strong flows.

Our team saved fourteen people who were trapped atop a house surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official stated. One resident frantically contacted us, saying his home’s roof was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We rescued him along with four family members.”

By Monday, officials confirmed at least two deaths: a drowning victim on the island and a second individual who died when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The intense storm weakened to a typhoon on Monday morning as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

Per meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is expected to lose strength while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service indicated efforts were ongoing to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Approximately thousands of shelters were activated to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed hundreds of lives with another 135 missing before moving on toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for those still missing were halted recently over risks for rescue workers.

Global warming is causing cyclones more intense and frequent. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to impact the nation in 2025.

Researchers report that the rate of intense cyclones striking the islands has risen by more than 100% over the last two decades.

International estimates suggest that intense storms result in approximately US$3.5 million in damage to the country annually.

The nation’s leader declared an emergency declaration last week because of the extensive devastation from the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
