European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
